To provide an overview of radiation therapy, side effects and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:


  1. Describe the purpose of radiation as a cancer treatment modality.

  2. Describe the treatment, side effects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for lung cancer.

  3. Describe the treatment, side effects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.

  4. Describe the treatment, side effects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for breast cancer.

  5. Discuss early and late skin reactions related to radiation therapy.

  6. To discuss the treatment and nursing management utilizing a case study of a locally advanced rectal cancer patient.

  7. Describe the late effects of radiation therapy in the pediatric patients with a focus on nursing implications.

  8. Discuss the role of the nurse in maximizing sexual health in the patient receiving radiation therapy for gynecologic cancers.

  9. Describe palliative radiation therapy.

  10. Describe the treatment, side effects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

  11. Utilize case studies to review the role of the nurse in radiation oncology.

Audience

This course is designed for new and experienced nurses who care for patients receiving radiation therapy.

Credit

Contact Hours will be awarded to registered nurses who attend the program in its entirety.
