Caring For The Radiation Oncology Patient: Treatment and Management Strategies

To provide an overview of radiation therapy, side effects and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy. 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:


  1. Describe the purpose of radiation as a cancer treatment modality.

  2. Describe the treatment, side e ects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for lung cancer.

  3. Describe the treatment, side e ects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.

  4. Describe the treatment, side e ects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for breast cancer.

  5. Discuss early and late skin reactions related to radiation therapy.

  6. Discuss the treatment and nursing management utilizing a case study of a locally advanced rectal cancer patient.

  7. Discuss the role of the nurse in maximizing sexual health in the patient receiving radiation therapy for gynecologic cancers.

  8. Describe the treatment, side e ects, and the role of the nurse in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

  9. Utilize case studies to review the role of the nurse in radiation oncology.

Audience

This course is designed for new and experienced nurses who care for patients receiving radiation therapy.

Contact Hours will be awarded to registered nurses who attend the program in its entirety.
