At times, anyone can use refuge and respite from cancer and its treatment. Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Patient Recreation Pavilion offers adult patients and their visitors a wide range of arts and crafts activities, a well-equipped library, an outdoor terrace, and scheduled entertainment events.
Our recreation therapists lead activities such as copper enameling and evening watercolor relaxation, and other healthful diversions like woodworking, origami, and stained glass. Other evening activities include bingo and Las Vegas nights. Live performances by outside entertainers, like students from The Juilliard School, are held several times during the week. Crafts and activities are also available to be done in patients’ rooms.
A Sanctuary from the Hospital Routine
With floor to ceiling windows, Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Recreation Pavilion is filled with natural light. The space is open to all Memorial Sloan Kettering patients and their visitors.
Yolanda Toth, Director of the Patient Recreation Department, demonstrates the proper way to cut and arrange fresh flowers during a class. Patients can complete their own arrangement.
With views of Manhattan’s East Side, the outside terrace is a nice place to spend an afternoon with friends and family who may be visiting.
Stained glass painting is a favorite among many. Recreation therapists are careful to avoid using supplies with any odors, as most patients have strong aversions due to their treatment.
Carnival is an annual event volunteers and staff look forward to. Memorial Sloan Kettering patient and volunteer Alexandra Capellini celebrates with others.
Staff from The Ritz Carlton volunteer their time every month for a special themed party. The hotel’s pastry chefs share culinary sweets, and “Minute to Win it” – a popular game - brings everyone together.
Many patients come to our penthouse pavilion just to “get away from it all,” enjoy the sunlight and the view, meet family and friends in relaxed surroundings, contribute to the eternal jigsaw puzzle, play pool, or snuggle with a good book. Patients visit us before outpatient appointments, and some have been known to schedule appointments to coincide with our events.
The Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Patient Recreation Pavilion welcomes Memorial Sloan Kettering patients and their visitors over 11 years of age. Nearly 30,000 people use our recreation services each year. The pavilion is open daily from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. For more information, please call 212-639-5978.
