4. How much time must I devote to the program?

We expect our mentors to make a regular commitment to Visible Ink and their assigned participants. Mentors should notify Judith Kelman, Visible Ink’s Director, about scheduling issues or changes.

5. Will I get special training before starting to work with writers?

Yes. We’re here to support you in every way that we can. All of our writing mentors take part in an orientation program that provides strategies for how to meet the special needs of people with cancer. As a mentor, you’ll have ongoing interactions with our program director and other participants. Many of our mentors also find our training manual and contact with other volunteers helpful. We can put you in touch with MSK social workers, program administrators, patient representatives, and others to handle special difficulties that might arise.

6. What if I’m not comfortable coaching all kinds of writing?

You will be paired with participants based on your areas of experience and expertise.
