The three-year ACGME-accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) combines education in gastrointestinal (GI) clinical care and endoscopic training with excellent clinical research opportunities.

The fellowship, offered through the Gastroenterology Service at MSK, provides inpatient and outpatient GI consultation covering the full spectrum of benign and malignant GI and hepatopancreatobiliary disorders. In addition to our exceptional international reputation in GI/endoscopic oncology, our team also has a strong commitment to clinical management and training in general gastroenterology, hepatology, pancreatobiliary diseases, endoscopy, and nutrition.

Through the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program, fellows gain access to the continuum of GI procedures in MSK’s state-of-the-art GI endoscopy units. During the course of their training, fellows develop expertise in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, dilation, hemostasis, polypectomy, small bowel enteroscopy (including video capsule endoscopy), enteral stent insertion, percutaneous gastrostomy and jejunostomy tube placement, and exposure to the performance and management of patients undergoing endoscopic submucosal dissection, as well as exposure to endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), including therapeutic EUS and ERCP interventions.

Our fellows also benefit from the Gastroenterology Service’s strong and longstanding relationships with MSK colleagues across the Department of Surgery, Gastrointestinal Oncology Service, Department of Radiology, Interventional Radiology Service, Clinical Genetics Service, Department of Pathology, and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The cross-disciplinary nature of our fellowship program is felt across shared clinical care, participation in weekly multidisciplinary disease management team conferences, and collaborative research opportunities.

Dr. Ludwig has been the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director since 2018. She is currently a Clinical Associate Attending Physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and a Clinical Associate Professor at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She completed the three-year Gastroenterology and Nutrition fellowship here at MSK in 2006 and joined the faculty directly thereafter. Dr. Ludwig served as Associate Program Director of the fellowship from 2008 through 2018.

In her free time, she loves spending time with her daughters, reading, and baking.

Fellow Responsibilities

Fellows’ clinical responsibilities include outpatient clinic, outpatient and inpatient endoscopy, and inpatient consults. Our schedules are broken down on a weekly basis; rotations switch every three months.

First-Year Clinical Program

The first year of the fellowship is a hands-on training experience. MSK faculty lead regular lectures focused on introductory endoscopy, gastroenterology, and nutrition core curriculum topics. Faculty and staff assist with and prepare our fellows for the gastroenterology consult service, general endoscopy, and weekend and overnight call. Fellows will also have a 3-month rotation with MSK’s clinical nutrition service dedicated to nutrition training.

Second- and Third-Year Clinical Program

In their second and third years, our fellows build on their training and experience with increased endoscopy time and continued coverage of gastroenterology and nutrition consults. In their third year, fellows spend one month rotating with the Mt. Sinai liver transplant team and have more availability to focus on research and individualized training as they prepare for the next steps in their career.

Weekend and overnight calls are heavily weighted towards the earlier years of fellowship and incrementally decrease by the final year of fellowship.

Third-year fellows are also responsible for the organization and preparation of monthly call schedules, conference assignments, and working across services within the hospital to plan guest lectures during the morning conferences.

Fellows in the Gastroenterology Program

“Being a Gastroenterology fellow at MSK is akin to being an essential cog in a multifaceted team that values efficiency and accuracy. What fascinates me most is the diversity of gastrointestinal pathology and innovative treatments, as well as the multi-disciplinary approach that revolves around our patients. I have benefitted tremendously from interactions with highly-specialized teams in radiology, oncology, pathology, and surgery. At MSK, our faculty are available, and teaching is not an event but a constant. I am grateful for an education that prepares me for research, procedural and clinical expertise. In short, at MSK, we practice precision medicine on steroids.”

Joshua Foromera, MD, fellowship program graduate

“The Gastroenterology Fellowship at MSK was an experience that I will always cherish. From the immediate and numerous opportunities to develop proficiency with procedures, the mentorship from a group of exceedingly talented and caring faculty, and the exposure to both general and unique GI pathophysiology that translates well into life after training, I left feeling prepared and capable. I am truly grateful for everything this fellowship program did to get me there!”
