Journal Clubs

Pharmacy residents are responsible for scheduling, designing, and coordinating the bi-monthly journal club meetings. The main objective of the journal club is to expand the residents’ knowledge in both clinical and statistical considerations when critiquing a journal article. The number of journal club presentation required per year varies between programs.

Pharmacy Department Newsletter

Residents contribute to the newsletter as authors and editors. The newsletter provides pharmacy staff with up-to-date clinical and departmental news &medication safety updates; and formulary additions/deletions, new oncologic discoveries (treatment- or disease-related), announcements of new employees, and updates from The Joint Commission.

Clinical Presentations

Clinical Presentations are weekly meetings designed to discuss new clinical topics as well as patient-related cases with staff pharmacists. These presentations involve patients who are currently being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The meetings are organized to allow an active discussion among pharmacists. These didactic sessions are part of the career ladder of the pharmacists, and topics are not limited to oncology. Residents are required to present 5 to 6 clinical presentations per year.

Continuing Education Program

The Pharmacy Department is approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education to offer monthly Continuing Education (CE) programs for pharmacists and technicians. Each resident is required to provide one CE presentation (one contact hour) during the residency program.

Oncology Didactic Lectures

These bi-monthly lectures play a major role in the oncology residency, enhancing residents’ knowledge of antineoplastic agents and treatment of various cancers. These meetings are limited to the preceptors and residents only. It is expected that residents research the topic assigned prior to the discussion.

Pharmacy Operations

Residents are expected to staff one weekend and two evenings per month. Staffing helps residents develop professional practice skills as well as dispensing/distribution skills. This experience provides residents with a full understanding of the entire process of reviewing orders and dispensing chemotherapeutic agents. Residents are expected to practice as a pharmacist in a designated area throughout the residency year.
