Screening and Prevention
Dermatologists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hauppauge perform skin cancer screening examinations. Our physicians use a variety of imaging technologies to detect skin cancer, including:
- Digital photography, either of your whole body, or specific areas of abnormal skin, to monitor changes in your skin over time
- Dermoscopy, in which a hand-held instrument is used to see structures below the top layer of the skin
- Confocal microscopy, an investigational approach that can diagnose skin cancers at the cellular level
Our doctors also monitor patients who are at high risk of developing skin cancer, including those who have congenital nevi (moles present at birth), dysplastic nevi (atypical moles), fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, sun-damaged skin, or other factors that signal risk.
The dermatologic surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hauppauge is highly experienced in Mohs surgery, a precise procedure for removing cancers on the surface of the skin. Mohs surgery leaves healthy skin intact, minimizing scarring after the procedure.
We also offer photodynamic therapy, a treatment modality for actinic keratosis. In this procedure, a special chemical is applied to the skin. The skin is then exposed to a certain wavelength of light, which activates the chemical to release reactive oxygen molecules, destroying the precancerous cells.
If your skin examination reveals that you have a more aggressive skin cancer such as melanoma, dermatologists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hauppauge will work closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other physicians in our New York City locations to ensure that you receive the right care.
Because doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center are at the forefront of research on skin cancer, we are able to offer eligible patients certain innovative therapies that are not yet widely available. These new treatments are often being investigated through our program of clinical trials based in New York City. Learn more about clinical trials.
