Skin Cancer Care

Our surgeons specialize in treating melanomas and other skin cancers. Dermatologic surgeon Chih-Shan Jason Chen is highly experienced in Mohs surgery, which removes cancers on the surface of the skin while leaving healthy skin intact and minimizing scars.

We also offer photodynamic therapy, a nonsurgical treatment for actinic keratosis. Actinic keratosis is a skin infection that can lead to squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. In photodynamic therapy, a special chemical is applied to the skin. The skin is then exposed to a certain wavelength of light that activates the chemical to release reactive oxygen molecules, destroying the precancerous cells.

Whenever possible, we also integrate laser therapy, skin medications, and other nonsurgical treatments in the plan we create for each patient.

Screening and Prevention

Dermatologists at MSK Hauppauge perform skin cancer screening examinations. Our doctors use a variety of imaging tests to detect skin cancer, including:

  • 3-D photography, either of your whole body or of specific areas of abnormal skin, to monitor changes in your skin over time
  • dermoscopy, in which a hand-held instrument is used to see structures below the top layer of the skin
  • confocal microscopy, which can diagnose skin cancers at the cellular level

Our doctors also monitor patients who are at high risk of developing skin cancer. This includes those who have congenital nevi (moles that are present at birth), dysplastic nevi (moles that look unusual), fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, sun-damaged skin, or other factors that signal risk.

Head and Neck Cancer Care

MSK head and neck surgeon Bhuvanesh Singh sees patients with oral cancers, laryngeal cancers, pharyngeal (throat) cancers, nasal cavity cancers, thyroid cancers, and parathyroid cancers. A renowned expert in the field, Dr. Singh was asked by the American Joint Committee on Cancer to develop a new staging system for head and neck cancer that will ultimately form the basis of future diagnoses.
