Hello. My 80 year old father is currently a patient at MSK for primary stomach cancer. We live in Eastchester, NY and it was first diagnosed in August, 2014 at White Plains Hospital. It was said to be a contained tumor and my dad was seen by a gastric surgeon at MSK. He was all scheduled for surgery in the fall, but unfortunately, a last minute ct-scan revealed that a few spots had grown on the liver. So, for the past couple of months he has been undergoing treatment (chemo & radiation). Most recently, a ct-scan has indicated that the gastric tumor has resolved (good news), but he still has three spots on his liver (two old and one new). This past Wednesday, he received a new type of chemotherapy. At this time, do you feel surgery for the liver is warranted? Our family would greatly appreciate your opinion. Thank you so much for your time.

Dear Jill, we are sorry to hear about your father. Unfortunately, we can’t answer personal medical questions on the blog, but would encourage you to go back to the gastric surgeon he originally saw here for his advice. He is familiar with your dad’s medical history and can access his medical records in order to provide a personalized assessment and give an informed recommendation. Thank you for reaching out to us.

My first CAT scan (7/12) showed a 1.5 cm cyst within the uncinate process of the pancreas. The last cat scan (4/14) showed that the cyst is now 1.6 cm.
I had had several Endoscopic Ultra Sound preformed and everything appears stable. Should I be seeing someone at MSKCC? In 2012 I had an operation there for the removal of 2 malignant tumors The whole experience was excellent. I do like the Doctor I have and he appears to be on top of things.
The next step is an MRI which I won't have unless I'm completely sedated.
During one of the EUS he also discovered Barretts esophagus.
Does any of this sound serious enough to be seeing someone at MSKCC?

Hi Dr. D'Angelica,
My mom is 56 yrs old, and she has recently ben diagnosed with stage 4 Cholangiocarcinoma, which has spread into her liver. She is being treated with Chemotherapy drugs Gemcitabine & Cisplatin. Her oncologist said it's non operable and she has 10-11 months left. There is no cancer in our family, and the diagnoses is a total shock becasue my mom has always been so healthy. My mom's ocologist said there are no trials being run at the Alberta Cross Cancer Institute. Are there any new teatments, procedures, or clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering for this type of cancer? I feel I am at a lose, so any information you could provide I would greatly appreicate it. Thanks for your time.
Dear Angela, we are sorry to hear about your mother’s diagnosis. We currently have two open clinical trials evaluating treatments for patients with cholangiocarcinoma:

Hello, my father who's age 57 has a biliary duct obstruction and was recently diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). The doctor said it's stage 4 but has not spread to any of the other organs. It is in both left and right branches however, and there is no point of operating on it because of its stage. He suggested my dad goes through chemo therapy so that he can get some "extra time." The doctor also said if the chemo shrinks the tumor in the bile duct surgery would still not work, something tells otherwise. Are there any other options or steps that we can take? Please let us know. Thank
Angela, thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, we are unable to answer specific medical questions on our blog. However, if you would like to find out about other options for your father, by making an appointment with a Memorial Sloan Kettering physician, please call our Physician Referral Service at 800-525-2225 or go to http://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/appointment. Thanks for your comment.
