Sixth-year student Alexandria Miller was awarded the Chairman’s Prize for her first-author paper “Crystal Structure of the Human Two-Pore Domain Potassium Channel K2P1,” published in the journal Science on January 26, 2012. The study, which revealed the three-dimensional shape of a protein called K2P1 that regulates the flow of potassium ions in and out of cells, could shed light on how potassium channels function and guide the development of some types of drugs, including painkillers. See Alexandria’s application essay for a full explanation of the significance of the work and the key findings.

The Chairman’s Prize was established by Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Mr. Gerstner, for whom the school is named, is an internationally renowned corporate leader and philanthropist who has had a longstanding commitment to quality education. The Chairman’s Prize is awarded annually.
