Hyperplastic polyposis syndrome (HPS) is characterized by the development of multiple hyperplastic colon and rectal polyps.

Although hyperplastic polyps are typically considered to be benign, it is now known that individuals with HPS have a higher risk for colon and rectal cancer — perhaps as high as 40 percent.

Currently, there is not a genetic test for HPS. Research shows that several genetic mutations might be risk factors, but we don’t know enough about this condition yet.
