Adrenal cortex tumors that produce too much cortisol can cause Cushing’s syndrome. Cortisol is a hormone that affects metabolism and under normal circumstances helps the body recover from the stress caused by surgery, an injury, or an infection.
Symptoms of this type of adrenal tumor include:
- abdominal obesity and the development of stretch marks
- unexplained weight gain, rounding of the face, or thinning of the arms and legs
- increased fat accumulation behind the neck
- easy bruising
- unusual fatigue
- muscle weakness
- high blood pressure
- low blood potassium level
- high blood sugar
- depression
- irregular menstrual cycles
- sexual dysfunction
- osteoporosis
Most people diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome are between 20 and 50 years old.
