Radiation Therapy for Uterine Sarcoma

Share

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells. Depending on the type and stage of the uterine sarcoma you have, we may recommend one of the following radiation treatment approaches:

  • External beam radiation therapy: This approach involves directing a beam of radiation at the tumor. The beam passes through your body and destroys cancer cells in its path.
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy: This approach allows us to deliver higher doses of radiation with greater safety. Radiation therapists can shape pencil-thin radiation beams of varying intensity to fit the specific outline and size of your tumor. This reduces the dose of radiation to healthy tissues and can lessen the side effects of treatment.

Treatment with either approach is given over the course of several weeks.
