IHCD Service members

For more than 20 years, the Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities (IHCD) Service has worked to identify and eliminate disparities in health and cancer treatment among immigrants and minorities. Housed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center since 2011, the IHCD Service offers a wide range of programs for patients, healthcare professionals, and patient advocates.

Our team uses a multidisciplinary approach to address gaps in healthcare at the local, national, and global levels. Our community-based programs provide a gateway to health education and services for immigrants and other medically underserved minorities in New York City and beyond.

Through our research initiatives, we continually assess the impact of our programs and seek to identify disparities in cancer treatment and healthcare. We are also working to increase the representation of minorities in clinical trials.

In addition, our team offers medical translation and cultural competency training for healthcare professionals and patient advocates at Memorial Sloan Kettering and at other medical centers throughout the United States.

Internship Opportunities

If you are multilingual, enjoy working with patients, and have an interest in public health, consider an internship with the IHCD Service.

Program Overview

The Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Service Internship Program sponsors students to work as interns under the direct supervision of a faculty member or senior staff member. Interns contribute to the service’s work, enrich their understanding of data, learn about community outreach and research administration, and perform specific tasks and present their results. Interns learn about the wider MSK community at seminars and other events offered throughout the institution.

Intern Requirements and Selection Criteria

Candidates should:

  • be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with an affiliation agreement in place
  • have a strong academic record
  • be interested or have experience working in a research and/or community outreach team environment
  • be interested in health disparities and community-based research

Schedule

The IHCD Service Internship Program accepts students throughout the year on a rolling basis. The minimum duration of the internship is six weeks. All internships will be remote until further notice.

Application Requirements

Candidates must submit:

  • a curriculum vitae
  • completed application including list of references
  • enrollment verification which confirms the intern is currently a matriculated student at his/her institution; examples include a letter from the school’s registrar/bursar’s office or a transcript (scanned copies are acceptable)

IHCD Health Equity Seminar Series

The IHCD’s Health Equity Seminar Series features prominent experts in their field to educate the MSK community to current social determinants of health, health equity, racial justice, disparities in healthcare, and COVID-19 disparities.

“The Health Equity seminar series is part of our commitment to serve the diverse communities of New York City and the surrounding areas, and to help to ensure health equity and social justice,” says Francesca Gany, MD, MS, Chief of the IHCD. “We would like to express the great admiration, respect, and gratitude we have for the community members that we serve, and for our dedicated partner organizations. The response has been overwhelming and we thank our superb presenters.”

All seminars are held virtually via Zoom. The upcoming Winter 2022 season will kick off on February 16th and will focus an exciting lineup of speakers focusing on issues in the food realm, digital health equity, and health disparities in homeless populations. The full schedule is attached. Please RSVP for any/all talks here: Winter 2022 IHCD Health Equity Seminar Series RSVP Survey (surveymonkey.com).
