Integrative Oncology for Physicians

Share

According to survivorship statistics and date from the National Cancer Institute, there are approximately 14.5 million cancer survivors living in the United States. Technological advances in screening and detection, treatment and patient care will, thankfully, allow that number to rise. As more patients live beyond their diagnosis, supportive care services and integrative modalities will play a crucial component in a patient’s care, during and after their treatment. Complementary therapies can address physical and emotional side effects of a cancer diagnosis, treatment and long-term recovery. This 18-hour program provides physicians with guidelines for including integrative medicine modalities into their patients care plan. We include lectures on the pathophysiology of cancer, detection, surgical and therapeutic interventions, , side effects associated with common and rare cancer treatments.

Students also learn the benefits of common complementary therapies sought by patients and survivors. Experts in the fields of acupuncture,  massage therapy, exercise, nutrition and mind-body therapies discuss benefits, uses and patient safety guidelines

Participants leave this course with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Understand the role integrative medicine modalities can play in a patient’s treatment and their survivorship.
  • Communicate with patients and caregivers about complementary therapies and their safety
  • Assess efficacy of complementary medicine modalities
  • Apply integrative oncology theory and modalities in clinical and academic practice
