Yoga for the Cancer Patient

Share

Yoga is an integrative practice that seeks to address physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental health. Research conducted at Memorial Sloan Kettering and our years of experience teaching yoga indicate that people in active treatment, as well as survivors, can greatly benefit from incorporating yoga practice into their daily routine. However, yoga professionals must be aware of unique considerations and precautions to ensure safe and effective use of yoga for this population. Our Yoga for the Cancer Patient online course educates yoga professionals about the patient cancer care journey, which may include surgery, active treatment, and recovery.

This 16-hour program is taught through a series of video lectures by MSK faculty and yoga professionals. Participants learn about cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management, and how side effects for various cancers are most commonly addressed. We also highlight the science of yoga and its implications for overall health and discuss innovative research into using yoga as a tool for managing symptoms. In addition, we discuss how yoga professionals can work within the hospital setting, provide inpatient and outpatient posture demonstrations, and more.

This course is a complement to skills-based training and is applicable for yoga professionals with varying years of experience. We provide you with the knowledge and skills to:

  • appreciate the difference between yoga that is designed for patients with cancer as opposed to the general population
  • assess patients and document yoga treatments
  • develop appropriate, safe, and effective plans of care for people with cancer in inpatient and outpatient settings
  • adapt yoga techniques to accommodate medical equipment and patients’ concerns or sequelae during and after cancer treatment
  • practice yoga within the hospital setting
