Elective Course Description

This elective is designed to provide an introduction to the pathophysiology and management of disorders in benign hematology. The service performs inpatient and outpatient consults for thrombosis, bleeding, platelet abnormalities, and other hematologic disorders. Under the supervision of attending physicians and hematology fellows, the student will function as part of a consultative team participating in hematological diagnosis and therapy. They will be expected to gain proficiency in case presentations, diagnostic and management strategies, and the interpretation of peripheral blood smears. They will also participate in a range of educational activities, such as hematology-oncology grand rounds and small group discussions of the cases of the week. 

This elective is not open to international students.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the pathophysiology and management of common and clinically important benign hematology disorders, including: anemia, thrombosis, acquired and hereditary bleeding disorders, and thrombocytopenia.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in reviewing peripheral blood smears.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in performing a history and physical exam, as well as prepare consult and followup notes in benign hematology.
