Elective Course Description

Students will rotate on the Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service, where they will contribute to and learn from the care of patients. They will scrub in to the operating room and participate in daily rounds and conferences. Comprehension of the principles of diagnosis and curative surgical treatment of patients with neoplastic disease, understanding of evolving multidisciplinary treatment and principles for palliation of patients with cancer, and an exploration of the biology and natural history of neoplasia with an emphasis on soft tissue sarcoma, gastric cancer and melanoma. Students who are so inclined will have an opportunity to undertake a clinical project.

Learning Objectives 

  1. Acquire the basic skills necessary to evaluate a patient presenting with problems related to gastric cancer
  2. Obtain an understanding of the principles of diagnosis and curative surgical treatment of patients with gastric neoplastic disease
  3. Learn about multidisciplinary treatment and principles for palliation of patients with gastric cancer
  4. Explore the biology and natural history of neoplasia with an emphasis on soft tissue sarcoma, gastric cancer and melanoma
  5. Explain and interpret the medical literature pertinent to specific issues of gastric cancer care
