Elective Course Description

Students will rotate on the Hepatopancreatobiliary Service, where they will contribute to and learn from the care of patients with diseases of the liver, biliary tree, and pancreas. They will scrub in the operating room and participate in daily rounds and conferences. Students will also come to clinic and participate in evaluation of new patients. Course objectives include comprehension of the principles of diagnosis and curative surgical treatment of patients with neoplastic disease, understanding of evolving multidisciplinary treatment and principles for palliation of patients with cancer, and an exploration of the biology and natural history of neoplasia. Students who are so inclined will have an opportunity to undertake a clinical project.

Learning Objectives 

  1. Gain a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the anatomical features of the hepatopancreatobiliary system.
  2. Organize and deliver a clear, concise, and thorough oral presentation of a patient’s history and examination.
  3. Describe the use and interpretation of common tests used in hepatopancreatobiliary disease.
  4. Interpret and explain selected medical literature pertinent to surgical treatment of disease of the hepatopancreatobiliary system.
