Breast Surgery Resident Scholars Rotation

Share

The Breast Service in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, has an intense training program in breast surgical oncology for surgery residents currently enrolled in approved training programs. Clinical scholars would spend up to 2 months on the breast surgery service under the guidance of a faculty mentor, working as member of a team with breast surgery oncology fellows.

Clinical scholars would be integrated as full members of the clinical team, involved with all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care. Scholar will attend outpatient clinics and assist with surgical procedures and the perioperative care of patients. By working closely with both the Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology Services, the Breast Scholars resident’s experience will include an education set within a multidisciplinary setting. Resident participation in surgery will vary with the level of experience of the resident and the complexity of the surgical procedure.

Breast Surgery Clinical Scholars would participate in weekly didactic and multidisciplinary educational conferences and grand rounds, as well as specialty conferences at the Center on related scientific subjects. For those residents who want to spend 2 months on our service, a research mentor can be arranged to assure maximal academic productivity during the scholar’s experience.

Each clinical scholar will be provided with a $500 stipend to assist with travel expenses to New York City, a furnished apartment adjacent to the hospital (based on availability) access to the academic support facilities of the Department (medical editor’s office, biostatistics, data management and computer information systems). The parent-training program provides basic stipend and health insurance coverage for clinical scholars while the resident is at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
