During focal cryoablation, a needle-thin probe and ultrasound guidance are used to generate a field of very cold temperature directly where prostate tumor cells are located, destroying them. Urologic surgeon Jonathon Coleman describes the technique and preliminary evidence suggesting that focal cryoablation may provide an effective alternative to radical prostatectomy for small, localized tumors. Because the technique targets only a small area within the prostate, it is also associated with quicker recovery time, less pain, and fewer side effects overall, and may also preserve the option for localized treatment if cancer recurs. Many patients return home the day after the procedure.
