Shilpi Banerjee, PhD, JD, serves as Chief Intellectual Property Counsel, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and she is Associate General Counsel. She directs the Office of Technology Development’s Contracts Unit, where she leads a team of attorneys handling agreements related to the research enterprise at MSK, including sponsored laboratory research and clinical research, as well as transactional and litigation matters related to MSK intellectual property.
Prior to joining Memorial Sloan Kettering in 2013, Shilpi served as Counsel and Chair, Research and Education Practice Group, of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where she worked since 2009. Her responsibilities included counseling the Clinic’s technology commercialization and corporate venturing arm, supervising and collaborating with outside counsel in intellectual property matters, and advising on, negotiating, and drafting contracts, including patent license agreements and sponsored research agreements. Previously, Shilpi was an Associate at Sidley Austin LLP in its New York City office (2006-2009) and at Ropes and Gray LLP (formerly Fish & Neave) in Palo Alto and New York (2002-2006).
Shilpi received her JD degree from Stanford Law School in 2002 and her PhD in 1993 from the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology of Tufts University School of Medicine. Her scientific experience includes serving as a Research Associate in the Department of Neuroscience at Case Western Reserve University, and as a Research Fellow, Muscular Dystrophy Association fellowship grantee, in the Division of Biology at the California Institute of Technology, where her research focused on molecular and developmental neuroscience.
