The Research Engineering Lab (REL) provides technical support and development of specialized instrumentation and equipment for researchers of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. REL activities involve, among others, the mechanical design and development of specialized parts; the design of control systems for experiments or process automation; the design and development of specialized optical and imaging systems; instrument modification and alteration; and consulting services on subjects related to these fields.

The following are some of the skills and areas of operation provided by the lab:

  • Mechanical, optical and electronic design (CAD, design and development).
  • Detectors, sensors, and controllers (radiation, temperature, pressure, humidity, position).
  • Signal detection and generation (digital signal processing, signal conditioning, signal modulation techniques, arbitrary signal generation, digital-to-analog conversions).
  • Data acquisition (measurement, analog-to-digital conversions, data storing).
  • Data visualization (rendering, deconvolution).
  • Imaging and microscopy (CCDs, light sources, lenses, confocal, multi-photon).
  • Optics and photonics (lasers, spectroscopy, filters, and dichroics).
  • System integration (experimental set-up, automation, and control).
  • Automation and robotics (computer vision, motion control, task scheduling, scripting).
  • Mathematical modeling (dynamical simulations, analysis, and graphics).
  • Microfluidics, gaseous ions, and cryogenics (bio-analytical chemistry, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, vacuum, liquid nitrogen, and He).
  • Magnetics (magnets, fields, particles).

Advisory services provided within the general areas of engineering, physics, and instrumentation:

  • Internal consultation on bio-instrumentation and engineering techniques.
  • Evaluation and acquisition of commercially available instruments and products.
  • Search for sources of specialized products.
  • Search and contracting of specialized technical services.
  • Assistance in locating and hiring of external engineering staff (e.g. junior engineers, computer experts).

The REL is dedicated to developing solutions to research problems that are not directly available commercially or from any other source. However, the facility can be asked to provide its expertise for the procurement of instrumentation. The REL will not be involved in the repair or service of equipment as other sources for repair are available, including resources already existing at the Center.

Services of REL are available of a first-come first-served basis to all investigators at Memorial Sloan Kettering and require a charge-back arrangement for consumables, labor and equipment. By nature of the type of services that this facility provides, all projects will be considered on a case-by-case basis following evaluation by REL management. The planning of projects to be developed is the joint responsibility of the investigator requesting the service and the facility management. The technical difficulty and experimental risk of the projects will be evaluated to determine the project deliverables. Please direct all requests to the REL head for consideration and evaluation.
