Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation

Sergio Giralt, Chief of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, says that patients with bone marrow that is free of abnormal white blood cells may be candidates for autologous transplantation. In this procedure, a patient’s own stem cells are collected and then transplanted back into him or her. This therapy is the most common transplant procedure for patients with myeloma.
