Breathing Exercises

Coordinating breathing patterns with movement can improve muscle flexibility and make it easier to gain strength, especially after surgery, says Donna Wilson, RN, of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Integrative Medicine Service. Coordinating breathing with movement involves using the muscles of your chest wall, shoulders, diaphragm, and abdomen. Wilson demonstrates several breathing exercises that can be performed while sitting in a chair or at the edge of your bed, or while walking down the hall.
