Cancer Treatment and Infertility in Men

Infertility in men may be caused by the cancer itself, or by treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy, explains Dr. John Mulhall, director of the Male Sexual and Reproductive Medicine Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Effects on fertility may depend on the treatment type, dose, and duration. A fertility counselor can help patients and their doctors select therapies that will help maintain fertility, suggest strategies to reduce the toxic effects of treatment, and discover preexisting conditions that may contribute to infertility.
