Donor-Recipient Matching of Unrelated Cord Blood Units (2012 ASH Conference)

The optimal criteria for selecting cord blood (CB) units are unknown. Recent data suggest that CB donor-recipient match criteria should be upgraded to six HLA alleles or higher, but how to clinically implement the criteria for higher-resolution HLA matches as well as how this could affect CB unit selection remain unclear.

Fellow Parastoo Dahi describes study findings that indicate that a higher-resolution HLA matching is possible without significantly compromising graft dose in unrelated cord blood transplantation. She notes that larger studies will be required to determine the impact of high-resolution HLA matching on disease-free survival.
