Effects of Radiation Therapy on Skin

Memorial Sloan Kettering dermatologist Mario Lacouture says that skin irritation is a common side effect of radiation therapy. Topical corticosteroids can reduce irritation and inflammation during and immediately after treatment. Dr. Lacouture recommends having a periodic skin evaluation to identify and treat long-term side effects of radiation therapy, such as discoloration, dilated blood vessels, and dry or flaky skin.
