Surgery to remove the prostate and nearby lymph nodes, called radical prostatectomy, is usually curative for men with a localized tumor that is confined to the prostate, says surgical oncologist Vincent Laudone of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Many doctors now perform robot-assisted prostate surgery, which allows for a high level of precision and can reduce the risk of injuring the nerves needed for an erection. Regardless of which surgical approach you choose, the experience of your surgeon and treatment team is the most important factor in ensuring a good surgical outcome.
