In this portion of a Memorial Sloan Kettering CancerSmart video series moderated by CBS’s Max Gomez, dermatologist Mario Lacouture explains that although dermatologists and other specialists are not part of the treatment team at many cancer centers, those who work with cancer patients may treat some side effects differently than specialists outside of the cancer setting. This is why doctors who are unfamiliar with the dermatologic side effects of cancer treatment should make referrals to specialists if needed. Dr. Lacouture also stresses why it is also equally important for specialists to communicate with a patient’s oncologist to make sure the treatments prescribed do not have an impact on cancer treatment.
