Information for those newly diagnosed with leukemia

Researchers have noticed an increasing proportion of younger patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in recent years.

Treatment approaches for adult leukemia may include chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Radiation therapy is sometimes used for leukemia in the central nervous system.

In this section you can find information about our expertise in treating patients with CML, our services, and our research.

  • Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy
Treatment for the chronic phase of CML typically includes imatinib (Gleevec). Our investigators are also looking into ways to extend the effectiveness of imatinib by combining it with other agents known to be active against CML.
  • Investigational Approaches
Investigators are pursuing a variety of strategies to control the disease -- approaches that can kill tumor cells directly, inhibit the body's production of substances that promote their growth, or that enhance the immune response against leukemic cells.
