Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Department of Surgery offers a broad array of educational opportunities for surgeons at all levels of training. The department is dedicated to excellence in education through each of these programs.
Undergraduate medical education includes a primary commitment to The Weill Medical College of Cornell University, providing opportunities for fourth year medical student surgical electives. Medical students from across the nation and the world also take advantage of the rotations on any of the 12 surgical services at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
Graduate medical education is an important foundation for the preeminence of the hospital. Resident education spans the years PGY1 through PGY5. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has surgical residents in General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Urology rotating from New York Hospital and numerous other surgical programs. Resident research fellowships are available in many surgical specialties. Specialty surgical fellowships are offered concentrating on oncology training in Breast, Colorectal, Dental, Gynecology, Head and Neck, Hepatobiliary, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery. The Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center supports the training of over 50 fellows per year in our world-renowned programs of intense surgical education in the multidisciplinary care of the cancer patient.
Continuing medical education is offered in the form of numerous surgical specialty conferences throughout the week. These are organized in a disease management setting, emphasizing the multidisciplinary care of the cancer patient as representatives from surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology and other specialties meet to discuss patients and issues of common interest. National and international observers are given opportunities to see the nature of cancer care provided by the surgical teams at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Postdoctoral research fellowships in surgical laboratories at the Sloan-Kettering Institute are yet another important portion of the comprehensive program opportunities. The Department of Surgery sponsors many local, national, and international annual conferences on a broad range of surgical oncology topics in an effort to extend the understanding of the management of the cancer patient.
Program development and redesign characterizes the Office of Surgical Education, which provides administrative direction and oversight for this broad range of programs. The programs attempt to meet the vision of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as it seeks to meet the challenge of the progressive control and cure of cancer.
