Making an Appointment

Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Clinical Genetics Service (CGS) has always been a leader in developing innovative ways to provide genetic counseling and testing services to people with cancer and their family members. This includes one-on-one consultations, family consultations, telemedicine consultations, and online previsit educational questionnaires.

CGS’s main office is at 222 East 70th Street in Manhattan. We also offer consultations at many other Manhattan locations, including Memorial Hospital, the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center, the Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion, and MSK’s regional sites in New Jersey (Basking Ridge, Bergen, and Monmouth), Westchester, and on Long Island (Commack and Nassau).

Our team of cancer-focused genetic counselors is the heart of the CGS. Everyone who comes through our clinic is assigned to a genetic counselor and is required to meet with them before meeting with one of our doctors.

Contact the MSK Clinical Genetics Service

To contact MSK’s CGS, to make an appointment, or to learn more, call 646-888-4050. MSK patients can also contact CGS through the MyMSK portal at Clinical Genetics.

For consultations to provide the most benefit, the CGS team has a step-by-step process for reviewing cases to ensure that you will see the best person.

  • Referrals: Referrals may be made by your MSK doctor or a doctor at another institution. You or one of your family members may also call us directly.
  • Genetic risk assessment: This questionnaire is completed by you and sent to the CGS.
  • Medical records: You will need to send any requested medical records, including previous genetic test results for both you and your family members, and relevant pathology reports.
  • Review: The CGS team reviews the questionnaire and medical records. This process may take a few weeks and may result in a request for more information.
  • Triage: The CGS team evaluates you for scheduling. Scheduling is determined based on the cancer history, genetic testing recommendations, and where you are being treated.
  • Scheduling: The CGS team will reach out to you either by telephone or the MyMSK patient portal to offer scheduling options. Appointments may be held in-person at one of our MSK sites or via telemedicine, depending upon various factors.

Telemedicine Appointments

We know that traveling to and from appointments can take a lot of time and energy. That’s why, for many types of CGS visits, you may be able to see your MSK care team through our telemedicine program. If we determine that telemedicine would be appropriate for you, a member of your care team will reach out. Eligibility to participate may be based on where you are located, your insurance carrier, and your medical situation.

Telemedicine is the use of video technology to connect you with members of your MSK care team. We use secure technology to make sure all of your information stays private. You can communicate through face-to-face video conferencing via a desktop computer, laptop, or tablet device. During your appointment, your provider will be able to check how you’re doing, assess your follow-up needs, and discuss problems you may be having.
