A Phase I/II Study of Obatoclax Mesylate (GX15-070MS) Plus Topotecan in Patients with Relapsed Small Cell Lung Carcinoma

[Protocol 07-082]

Full Title :
PHASE I/II STUDY OF OBATOCLAX MESYLATE (GX15-070MS), A BCL-2 ANTAGONIST, PLUS TOPOTECAN IN RELAPSED SMALL CELL LUNG CARCINOMA (NCI PROTOCOL #7937)
Purpose :

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a combination of two drugs in patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung which has returned despite prior chemotherapy. The two drugs are obatoclax mesylate (GX15-070) and topotecan.

Obatoclax is an investigational drug designed to kill cancer cells by blocking bcl-2, a protein that usually prevents cell death. Researchers are evaluating the safety and effectiveness of obatoclax at different doses in combination with a standard chemotherapy drug called topotecan.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have a confirmed diagnosis of small cell carcinoma of the lung that has returned despite any number of regimens of chemotherapy.
  • Patients may not have progressive brain metastases or leptomeningeal disease.
  • At least 4 weeks must have passed since completing prior chemotherapy or radiation therapy and receipt of the study drugs.
  • Patients must be physically well enough that they are fully ambulatory, capable of all self care, and are capable of all but physically strenuous activities. As an example, patients must be well enough that they would be able to carry out office work or light housework.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility, please contact Dr. Lee M. Krug at 212-639-8420.
