The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Transitional Year Residency Program is a one-year internship designed to provide well-balanced graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines.

The program consists of 24 weeks of Internal Medicine inpatient service, four weeks of General Surgery, four weeks of Emergency Medicine, a half-day Ambulatory Care clinic, 16 weeks of elective rotations, and four weeks of vacation.

Your 16 weeks of electives can be selected from the following:

  • Anesthesia
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Dermatology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Pain & Palliative Care
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Radiology
  • Surgery subspecialties
  • Internal Medicine subspecialties

International Medical Graduates must also submit a copy of their ECFMG Certificate. If you match to our program, we sponsor a J-1 visa.

Additional Information

The Center

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is a 437-bed tertiary care hospital with over 500 attendings in 12 departments. Although it specializes in cancer care, the hospital manages a broad range of nononcologic problems. The hospital has over 12,000 annual admissions and discharges, greater than 270,000 outpatient visits, more than 14,000 surgical procedures, and greater than 200,000 radiology procedures performed yearly.

The Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine has 150 attending, one-third of whom are nononcologists. The Division of General Medicine has eight subspecialty services including: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, Integrative Medicine, Pulmonary and Renal Medicine. There are seven Internal Medicine subspecialty fellowship programs represented at MSKCC, not including hematology and oncology.

Conferences

Department of Medicine conferences include daily bedside attending rounds, morning reports, core curriculum lectures series, chairman professor rounds, medical grand rounds and Journal Club. Other conferences in the various disciplines will be required as you rotate through the various departments.

Living in New York City

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is located on the Upper East Side of New York City, in a biomedical complex that includes Rockefeller University, Cornell Medical College, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. There is ready access to many cultural events, including concerts, theater, opera, and ballet. Housing in one of a number of residential buildings around MSKCC and within walking distance of the institution may be available to fellows, residents, and their families.
