Gastroenterologist Mark Schattner describes the applications of upper endoscopy, a minimally invasive diagnostic approach used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Endoscopists perform this procedure at Memorial Sloan Kettering with a very low rate of complications; interventional radiologists and surgeons are available to manage any rare complications that do arise. Dr. Schattner notes that patients also benefit from same-day anesthesia evaluation, and that the anesthesiologist is present during the procedure.
