Radiologist Laura Liberman of Memorial Sloan Kettering offers a variety of tips to reduce anxiety about upcoming medical scans or test results. You can choose a doctor who is easy to talk to; learn what to expect from a scan; avoid negative people or influences near the time of the scan; and have your imaging test done at a place and time that makes you feel most comfortable. Distract yourself with music or a book, or by bringing a calm friend to your appointment. Ask your doctor to prescribe or use a topical anesthesia if you are having a needle biopsy.

Dr. Liberman also recommends scheduling an appointment with your doctor to discuss the scan’s results, rather than waiting for a phone call.
