A Study of Acupuncture to Help People At High Risk for Sepsis

Acupuncture to Improve Outcomes in Sepsis Patient: The ACTIONS Trial

Purpose

Researchers want to see if acupuncture can improve outcomes in people with cancer at high risk for sepsis. People with cancer have a high risk of sepsis because of treatments that weaken the immune system. Sepsis can make a person very ill and is life-threatening.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body. The goal is make patients less ill and do better when suffering from sepsis. This study is being done in people staying in the hospital to receive sepsis treatment. They will be randomly assigned to receive either:

• Real acupuncture
• Sham acupuncture, which uses different needles at different sites of the body

Who Can Join

The people in this study are adults being treated for possible sepsis at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
