This information explains what to do at home during your blinatumomab (blin-a-TOO-moh-mab) infusion. In this resource, the words “you” and “your” mean you or your child.
This information is meant for pediatric patients (people getting treatment at MSK Kids). If you are an adult patient (not getting treatment at MSK Kids), your care team will give you different instructions.
Check the infusion line every day
-
Check the connections on the infusion line at least once every day. Make sure they’re secure.
- If the line is disconnected, do not reconnect it. Clamp it with the clamp attached to the line. Call 212-639-2000 right away. Ask to talk with the pediatric fellow.
- Make sure nothing pulls on the line. Remember to keep the blinatumomab backpack nearby. If you move too far from the backpack, it will pull on the infusion line.
Check the pump every day
-
Check the infusion light on the pump at least once every day. It should be green and blinking.
- If the pump is beeping, call 212-639-2000. Ask to talk with the pediatric fellow.
- The pump may show information on its screen when it beeps. Read CADD®-Solis VIP Alarm Help Guide for examples of what it may show.
- Keep the pump at or above your heart level. This helps the blinatumomab flow steadily.
- Keep the pump out of direct sunlight.
- Avoid exposing the pump to temperatures below 34 °F (2°C) or above 104 °F (40 °C).
- Avoid exposing the pump to very high humidity. An example of very high humidity is a steamy bathroom after a long, hot shower.
Keep the implanted port dressing (bandage) clean, dry, and unbroken
- Cover the implanted port dressing with a waterproof dressing (such as AquaGuard®) every time you bathe or shower. Your care team will show you how.
- If the dressing gets dirty, wet, or torn, call 212-639-2000. Ask to talk with the pediatric fellow. You will need to come to the Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center (PACC) so we can change the dressing.
Make sure the infusion is not delayed or stopped
- Your will have scheduled appointments to change the blinatumomab bag during your infusion. It is very important to be on time for these appointments. This helps make sure we can change the blinatumomab bag at exactly the right time.
-
If there’s a problem with the pump, infusion line, or implanted port, call 202-639-2000 right away. Ask to talk with the pediatric fellow. You will need to come to the PACC in Manhattan.
- You may need to spend a long time in the PACC if you unexpectedly need a new blinatumomab bag. We make each bag only when you need it. This process involves many people and can take several hours.
- If your infusion stops for more than 4 hours, we may admit you to the hospital to restart it. This is because you may have side effects when the infusion starts again. We can better watch for and manage these side effects in the hospital.
When to call your care team
Call 212-639-2000 and ask for the pediatric fellow if:
- The infusion line is disconnected.
- The pump is beeping.
- The implanted port dressing is dirty, wet, or torn.
- You have any pain or swelling around the implanted port.
- There’s any sign of liquid leaking from the implanted port, tubing, or pump.
- You have any questions or concerns.
You can talk with a pediatric fellow 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
