Bayard Clarkson Receives 2012 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association for Cancer Research

Molecular pharmacologist Bayard Clarkson

Bayard D. Clarkson, of the Sloan Kettering Institute’s Molecular Pharmacology and Chemistry Program, received the 2012 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association for Cancer Research at its annual meeting in Chicago in April. The AACR previously named an annual scientific session in his honor, “The Bayard D. Clarkson Symposium on Stem Cells and Cancer.”

Dr. Clarkson was recognized for more than three decades of work on behalf of the AACR.  His most recent service was as president and chairman of the AACR Foundation for the Prevention and Cure of Cancer, which he helped found in 2001.

Dr. Clarkson, who currently holds the Enid A. Haupt Chair of Therapeutic Research, earned his MD degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1952. He has treated patients and conducted research at Memorial Sloan Kettering for more than five decades, since joining the faculty of Memorial Hospital and the Sloan Kettering Institute in 1959. He is also the author of more than 400 scientific papers. He served as Chief of the Hematology and Lymphoma Service for 19 years and Associate Chairman of Medicine and Director of the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Training Program for ten years.
