Risk of Recurrence Following Surgery

Share

Our kidney cancer nomogram is for patients who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy (partial or complete surgical removal of a kidney) for newly diagnosed renal cell carcinoma (a type of kidney cancer). This nomogram predicts the probability of remaining free of renal cell carcinoma five years after surgery.

Results produced by this tool are based on data from patients treated at MSK, a large research institution with surgeons who perform a high volume of kidney cancer procedures. All results must be understood in the context of each patient’s specific treatment plan. Patients and caregivers using this tool should discuss the result with the patient’s physician.

To gather the information required to use this nomogram, use our worksheet.

What is histology?
Histology refers to the exact type of cancer based on examination of the tumor tissue under the microscope. Renal cell carcinoma is classified as Chromophobe; Conventional; or Papillary. If the histology is unknown, select “None.”
More on symptoms
Select “None” if you had no symptoms; “Incidental” if you had minor symptoms; “Local” if your symptoms were restricted to the site of origin; or “Systemic” if your symptoms affected your entire body.
Note: This nomogram was created using the AJCC Version 5 TNM Staging System (1997), and is applicable to T stages T1 to T3c. If your pathology report uses a later version with T stages that are not included in this drop-down menu, consult with your physician for further guidance on selecting the correct T stage.
More on T staging
The T stages are part of the TNM Staging System, which uses TNM classifications to describe the extent of cancer in a patient's body. T describes the size of the tumor and whether it has invaded nearby tissue; N describes whether regional lymph nodes are involved and, if so, how extensively; and M describes whether distant metastasis (spread of cancer from one body part to another) is present. The system is maintained by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and is updated periodically.
