Molecular Imaging Therapy Fellowship

Share

This one-year clinical fellowship provides advanced training in PET/CT, radionuclide therapy and general nuclear medicine in patients with cancer.  Nuclear Oncology fellows are trained under the auspices of the Molecular Imaging and Therapy (MIT) Service in the Department of Radiology. Over 500,000 diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures were performed at MSKCC in 2017. Rotations are conducted at the main campus of Memorial Hospital/MSKCC, 1275 York Avenue. The MIT Service has 10 PET/CT, 1 PET-MRI, 4 SPECT/CT scanners, and 4 gamma cameras. A total of 16 ABNM-certified attendings work collaboratively with a team of 5 medical physicists, 8 nurses, 24 technologists, 5 radiopharmacists (assisted by 1 radiopharmacy technician), and 4 receptionists. The team performs 100-120 scans and treatments each day. Image analysis and reporting are done digitally.

Curriculum

The Nuclear Oncology fellowship provides extensive training in the use of radionuclide techniques for the diagnosis and management of patients with cancer, cardiac and inflammatory conditions. Under faculty supervision, fellows perform and interpret PET/CT imaging procedures and single photon studies and manage patients receiving therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Each fellow spends approximately 40 weeks in clinical rotations, including PET/CT, Therapy, Nuclear Cardiology, and General Nuclear Medicine. Fellows have at least 8 weeks of elective and research time, which can be used for rotations in diagnostic radiology, such as CT or MRI, as well as for clinical research and conferences.

Nuclear Oncology clinical fellows have evening and weekend on-call responsibilities, taken in one-week blocks. Evening calls begin at and end at Weekend calls are taken predominantly from home, with the occasional need to come into the hospital. There is no overnight on-call responsibility. Currently, we have up to 8 trainees (fellows and residents), resulting in an average on-call assignment of once every 8 weeks.

Each fellow is encouraged to participate in at least one clinical research project, leading to presentation at a scientific meeting and peer-reviewed publication.

The fellows attend and present cases and lectures at the weekly Radiology Department Case Conference; they also attend the Molecular Imaging and Therapy Seminars, weekly didactic lecture series for the nuclear medicine residents and fellows, monthly Journal Club meetings, and selected weekly Tumor Board/Disease Management Team conferences.

Subsidized housing is available in the area.

Second-Year Option

The fellowship can be extended for an additional year for highly motivated and qualified candidates with a strong desire to pursue a career in academic nuclear medicine and novel research with diagnostic and theranostic radiopharmaceuticals. The second year of the program is dedicated to clinical or translational research within the Molecular Imaging and Therapy Service and laboratories.

Eligibility

U.S.-trained applicants must be board-eligible/certified in Nuclear Medicine or Diagnostic Radiology as well as have a License to Practice Medicine in New York State before the start of the fellowship. Foreign applicants must have completed the equivalent of a Nuclear Medicine residency or Radiology residency and must obtain ECFMG certification, a clinical visa, and a Limited Permit or a full License to Practice Medicine in New York State prior to the fellowship. MSKCC does sponsor H-1B visas. Fellows who are board-eligible/certified in Diagnostic Radiology will be eligible for the ABNM certification examination.
