Elective Course Description

This primarily outpatient elective is offered to fourth year medical students with a strong interest in pediatric neurology or pediatric oncology. This elective offers an opportunity for students to gain experience in the evaluation and management of patients with primary pediatric central nervous system malignancies and patients with other pediatric malignancies who develop neurologic complications. Students will work under the direct supervision of the pediatric neuro-oncology attending and will participate fully in all of the seminars and conferences at Memorial Hospital in the pediatric and occasionally adult neuro-oncology departments. In addition, the students will have ample time to present cases at patient management conferences and search the literature about relevant topics. The student will also gain experience in neuroradiology and neuropathology of pediatric brain tumors. Medical Students will be evaluated and supervised by the Neuro-Oncology Teaching Faculty based on their interactions throughout their elective.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn about the multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of pediatric brain tumors.
  2. Learn the difference between low grade and high grade pediatric brain tumors.
  3. Learn clinical manifestation of brain tumors and neuroradiologic correlates.
  4. Learn some basic principles regarding chemotherapy and its complications.
