Elective Course Description
This 4-week elective experience in Interventional Oncology is designed to introduce the 4th year medical student to diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative procedures for cancer patients on a busy Interventional Radiology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The student will also attend weekly outpatient clinic and participate with inpatient rounds. The student will attend multidisciplinary conferences as well as the weekly VIR fellowship core curriculum meetings. The students present at monthly IR journal club. The student will participate in image guided intervention, but are not placed on call schedule. Evaluation criteria include attendance, completion of required readings and quality of comprehension, clinical performance in patient care areas (procedure rooms, clinic, inpatient rounds), and a potential final oral examination. Mentored involvement in an achievable academic or research project is required for Honors evaluation.

- Identify the role of image guided interventions for each specific cancer and organ
- Understand the multidisciplinary options for cancer patients
- Gain knowledge about pre- peri-, post procedural and long-term follow-up care to cancer patients who undergo image guided interventions
- Gain knowledge about a wide range of “body IR” domain interventions
