I am a through and through Jersey girl. I grew up in Parsippany, attended public high school, and graduated from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark. I only left the state briefly to attend Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass (Go Eagles!). Making the decision to move to NYC was a tough one, especially since I had to leave my family (including my husband) behind. The sacrifice was well worth the rewards, as I can’t think of a better place for my intern year than MSKCC. I love working in an institution that is on the forefront of medicine. We aren’t just following the newest protocols here, we are writing them. The technology is amazing - we have all of the newest gadgets at our fingertips and the computerized order system is worth its weight in gold. Not to mention that we are treated very well, from all of our meals to subsidized housing with a 2 minute commute. You meet a ton of interns and residents from area hospitals all over NYC which is great, but it is also nice having the core 6 TYs (as we are called). Life as an intern is busy, but if we happen to stumble upon each other in the lobby we’ll grab an impromptu dinner. A few of us work out together at the same gym and others are involved in a friendly poker game. Obviously, there is no need to talk about life outside the hospital. We live in NYC - it has everything! I can only hope to see and do as much as possible before returning to New Jersey.
