Dr. Alan Carver supports people and families facing advanced neurologic complications of cancer at MSK, easing pain and symptoms through palliative care.

I actually began my career as a high school teacher, and what I loved most was building relationships with my students and helping them navigate challenges. Over time, I realized that the same kind of one-on-one connection was calling me toward medicine.

Hello, I’m Dr. Alan Carver, a neurologist and palliative medicine specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Most of the people I care for are living with the neurologic complications of cancer, like headaches, seizures, and symptoms that arise from both the disease and its treatment. My role is to help manage those symptoms, to improve quality of life, and to make sure you and your family feel understood and supported.

At MSK, I’m privileged to be part of a community of scientists and clinicians who have worked tirelessly to raise the standard of cancer care, here and around the world. Together, we don’t just treat the cancer itself; we care for the person living with it.

For me, that means listening carefully, tailoring treatment to your needs, and remembering that even when a disease isn’t curable, there is so much we can do to treat, to comfort, and to support.

What’s most meaningful to me is helping my patients and their families navigate the challenges of cancer with dignity, comfort, and understanding. That’s the heart of my work in palliative medicine – caring for you at each and every stage of cancer.
