Dr. Mahmoud El-Tamer treats breast cancer at MSK using oncoplastic surgery and lumpectomy, focusing on removing tumors safely, preserving appearance, and shared decision-making.

Since I was 8 years old, I’ve known I wanted to become a surgeon. I found cancer care intriguing, particularly breast cancer, a common disease in women and rare, but prevalent, in men.

Hello, I'm Mahmoud El-Tamer, a breast surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I specialize in oncoplastic surgery, which involves repairing the breast defect after a tumor is removed with a lumpectomy.

In many cases, it’s safe and effective to remove tumors with a lumpectomy, a less invasive option. We perform a mastectomy only when it’s needed.

My goal is to treat your cancer successfully. I also care about your physical appearance after surgery, and I want the same results for you that I’d expect for my own family.

Your emotional recovery is an integral part of your physical well-being. Our decision-making is shared; and only after we’ve taken the time to discuss your situation and answer all of your questions, we will make decisions based on facts, not fear.

I am proud to be part of the team here at MSK, and to serve as a thought leader on a national and global scale. Even more than that, I’m proud to be doing what I always dreamed of in a place that treats our patients with such compassion and respect, while giving the very best our field has to offer.
