Watch How Two MSK Labs Came Together to Give a Stage 4 Lung Cancer Patient More Time

VIDEO | 03:35

Every cancer breakthrough begins years before it offers patients new hope. Our series Saved by Science takes you inside MSK’s world class research labs, where you’ll see patients meet the scientists whose discoveries not only changed their lives, but are transforming cancer care for patients around the world.

Hello, hi, Carlos.

I dreamt that someday I would be able to find something in my laboratory that would make a meaningful difference in someone's life.

He likes to pull my beard when he’s falling asleep.

He's now able to walk better. He has better balance, which was a struggle in the beginning.

He's like, hey, like, I got this, don't worry about me.

Have you ever been in a laboratory before?

Never. No.

Nice to meet you.

This is Carlos.

This is the first laboratory focused on the study of leptomeningeal metastases.

And it's the sort of problem that no one person can solve.

And so I'm really delighted to have been able to partner with a leader in the field, Dana Pe’er, who can help us uncover patterns that we would not have been able to see ourselves.

I came to MSK myself because I wanted to use my math to actually help people.

So Dana, this is Carlos.

I’m so pleased to meet you and to see you walking so well.

Less than a decade ago it would have been unimaginable to do what this machine can do.

It allows us to look at each and every one of your cells in your body.

These are your cells.

Wow, wow.

It took us years to develop these algorithms.

This is Carlos. Hello. Hey guys.

He is a living proof of why what we do matters.

I think everyone, my stepmother and my sister, we all feel very hopeful. It’s a huge difference.

This is the soul of science, everyone is working together to understand different parts of the same problem. And when we work together, we find and create something that could never have been seen before.
