Time to Read: About 3 minutes

This information will help you know who to contact when you’re recovering after surgery.

If you are worried about symptoms while you recover at home after surgery, call your MSK care team.

Your surgery care team knows your care best. Some symptoms are normal after surgery. Your care team can help you manage them. They may decide you need urgent care. They may ask you to go to an MSK location, or to get emergency care closer to your home.

Here’s how to contact your surgery team:

  • If you have symptoms that worry you, the first step is to call your MSK surgery care team. For anything that is not urgent, send a message through the MyMSK patient portal or call your surgeon’s office.
    • If you need medical care right away, call 911 or go to your local emergency room.
    • Call your surgeon’s office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
    • Before 9 a.m., after 5 p.m., on weekends, or on holidays, call the main hospital at 212-639-2000. They will contact the on-call surgery care team.
  • Based on your symptoms, your care team may ask you to get care right away. They may ask you to go to MSK’s Urgent Care Center (UCC) in Manhattan, or to MSK’s Symptom Care Clinic (SCC) near you.
  • Sometimes it makes sense for you to get care at another hospital. MSK has relationships with many high-quality healthcare providers at hospitals in New Jersey, Westchester, and on Long Island. These are expert doctors and other specialists who MSK doctors know, trust, and work with closely.
  • Your care team will tell you if this is the best option for you. MSK will let them know you’re on your way there. When you arrive, please tell them you’re an MSK patient.
  • If you must be admitted to the local hospital, your MSK care team will work with them to coordinate your care. Your MSK doctor will get updates on your care and be in touch with the care team treating you.
  • Your MSK team will support and guide your care. They will help coordinate any next steps in your care plan when you leave the local hospital.

Your health is always our top priority. Your MSK team is here for you with guidance and support when you need it. That’s true whether you’re getting care at MSK, or at one of our trusted local healthcare providers.

MSK Symptom Care Clinics

Our Symptom Care Clinics (SCCs) are special treatment centers for MSK patients. If you’re worried about your symptoms after surgery, your MSK doctor may tell you to get care at an SCC close to home. Always call your doctor before going to an SCC for care. They cannot see you without an appointment.
