Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program FAQs

1. What are my chances of getting into the program?

The Summer Fellowship Program is highly competitive. In 2026, our acceptance yield was 6 percent. However, since students apply for specific projects, some projects are more competitive than others. It is recommended that students apply for those projects that specifically interest them and for which they have relevant academic preparation and/or research experience.

2. When is the deadline for submission?

Our application process is open for 8 weeks. All applications and the Letter of Good Standing submission must be complete and received by the application deadline, which is January 29, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. EST. There will be no extensions granted.

3. What are the dates of the program?

The program will run for 8 weeks from June 14, 2027 until August 6, 2027.

Applicants should carefully consider final exam schedules, second- or third year start dates, family obligations, family vacations, and any anticipated personal commitments that may conflict with the program dates, including the start and end dates, before applying. Uninterrupted participation for the full duration of the program is required.

4. When will I find out if I’ve been accepted to the program?

All applicants will be notified of a decision by email during the Week of February 22, 2027. Notifications will be sent in batches as admissions decisions are made.

Accepted students will be expected to confirm their participation within three business days of their acceptance notification or forfeit their spot in the program.

Our application will close on January 29, 2027 and all student applications will move to the faculty review phase. Notifications of acceptance / denial in the program are sent via email once faculty members have reviewed all applications for their project.

5. What is the difference between my personal statement and research statement within my application?

Your personal statement should be no more than 3,000 characters, including spaces, and should address your interest in oncology and the program or experience you are applying to. Your research preference summary should be 250 words or less and address all projects you are applying to, explaining your interests in and preferences for each selected project.

6. Where can I find the projects for the fellowship program?

The projects and descriptions for 2027 are listed in the actual application. Applicants must begin the application and complete the demographic sections, to review the available projects. We would like students to apply to projects based on interest.

7. Are Letters of Recommendation required for this application? Should Letters of Recommendation be uploaded?

Our program doesn’t require Letters of Recommendation to be uploaded to our application portal; our only requirement is a Letter of Good Standing from your medical school.

A Letter of Good Standing is required for upload stating your current medical school year, confirmation of good standing, potential graduation date, and that no courses are being repeated or need to be repeated during the summer.

8. Will students be required to be onsite for the entire 8 weeks?

The summer program includes mandatory lectures, events, and team-building activities at our main campus in NYC (1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065). A calendar of events will be distributed prior to the start of the program. Because hands-on research experience is a core requirement, students will have an assigned desk onsite for the duration of the summer. Daily schedules will be determined by the research department in which each student is placed. Students typically follow the schedule of their faculty sponsor or the schedule that best meets the needs of the lab.
